Brands usually compare channels on cost per thousand impressions, or CPM. Campus postering and social ads can both be put on that scale, but the two numbers measure different things. This guide shows how to compare them fairly, with a worked example.
What social ads cost in Ireland
- Facebook and Instagram ads in Ireland cost about US$7.40 to US$12.00 per thousand impressions, or about €6.80 to €11.10 (Stackmatix, Facebook Ads CPM by Country, 2026).
- Another benchmark puts the Irish Meta average at about €9.65 per thousand impressions (Transparency Ads, Meta ads cost in Europe).
- For outdoor, Dublin street furniture runs at about €5 to €10 per thousand, and shopping centre digital screens at about €8 to €16 (AdQuick, Dublin DOOH advertising guide, 2026).
How a campus poster CPM is worked out
Posters are not counted by a platform, so their exposures have to be modelled. We use a simple, stated model:
- Take the student population of the campuses in the run.
- Assume 60% of them pass through the buildings used in a given week.
- Assume each student reached sees a placement three times a week.
- Multiply by the number of weeks, then divide the campaign cost by the exposures, per thousand.
On that model, StudentLink's Campus Environment Media works out at €2.63 to €4.90 per thousand exposures, depending on campuses and weeks.
A worked example
Take a campus of 20,000 students and a four week run.
- Weekly reach: 60% of 20,000 is 12,000 students.
- Exposures: 12,000 students x 3 views x 4 weeks = 144,000.
- The same 144,000 impressions bought on Meta at €9.65 per thousand would cost about €1,390.
- At €2.63 to €4.90 per thousand, the poster run comes to about €379 to €706 for the same exposures.
This is arithmetic on published benchmarks and a stated model, not a quote. Every StudentLink campaign is scoped and quoted per brief.
Why the two numbers are not the same thing
- Measured versus modelled. A platform counts social impressions. Poster exposures are estimated, so ask any supplier to show the model.
- Who sees it. Social ads can be targeted to an age band, but some impressions land outside your audience. A campus poster is seen almost entirely by students and staff.
- How it is seen. Social impressions are often a fraction of a second in a scrolling feed. A poster stays on the wall all week and is passed again and again on the same route.
- What it does best. Social ads are fast to launch and easy to measure by click. Posters build familiarity in the places students spend their week. They work best together, with a QR code on the poster to carry students to the offer.
Questions to ask any campus media supplier
- Which campuses and buildings, and how many placements in each?
- What exposure model do you use?
- How often are placements checked and replaced?
- Do you take only one brand per category?
- What report do we get at the end, and when is payment due?
